Do you know how to manage, analyse, visualize and share your data?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Winter term 2024\/2025, the University of G\u00f6ttingen offers an online course on \u2018Data Management and Data Carpentry Social Sciences\u2019 that will provide you with basic data skills on research data management and an introduction to the use of selected data tools (e.g. OpenRefine, R) necessary for conducting research. This course is open for Bachelor, Master or PhD students from <strong>all universities in Lower Saxony,<\/strong> particularly within the Social Sciences and related disciplines. The course is recommended to students from 4th semester, with some former experience in working with research data. Participants are encouraged to help each other and apply what they have learned to their own research problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result of this course, students will have learned the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Basic knowledge of data management, esp. data lifecycle, FAIR and Open Data, function and structure of data management plans, research data guidelines, infrastructures and services,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2022 Basic concepts, principles and approaches as well as tools for working with data, in particular:<ul><li>Data Organization in Spreadsheet: Basics of how to organize tabular data, handle date formatting, carry out quality control and quality assurance and export data to use with downstream applications.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Data Cleaning with OpenRefine: Explore, summarize, and clean tabular data reproducibly.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li> Data Analysis and Visualization in R: Import data into R, calculate summary statistics, and create publication-quality graphics.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Data Management with SQL: Structure data for database import. Query data within a relational database.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants who complete the assignment and assessment of the whole course (5 Nov \u2013 17 Dec 2024) will receive <strong>3 ECTS <\/strong>(Key Competences). <strong>Please check with your home faculty\/programme beforehand if the course can be integrated in your curriculum in order to successfully recognize the 3 ECTS!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Are you interested in joining the course?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course is open to G\u00f6ttingen students as well as students from all universities in Lower Saxony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please <strong>register <\/strong>for this course by <strong>31 October 2024<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students from G\u00f6ttingen should register directly via Stud.IP: <a href=\"https:\/\/s.gwdg.de\/OJbpvv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/s.gwdg.de\/OJbpvv<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students from universities in Lower Saxony, other than the University of G\u00f6ttingen, should register for the course via <a href=\"https:\/\/events.gwdg.de\/e\/rdm-dc-ws2024.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/events.gwdg.de\/e\/rdm-dc-ws2024<\/a> and additionally register as <strong>guest students<\/strong> (this is mandatory). Please note that students from universities in Lower Saxony are exempt from guest student fees if they present a valid student ID as evidence of their enrolment for the respective semester.
