This step is intended to further strengthen regional research infrastructure and sustainably support digital working practices in laboratories.

More information about the project can be found here: https://fdm-nds.de/index.php/en/elabftw_fdm-nds_eng/

The higher education landscape in Lower Saxony is highly diverse: While some institutions have successfully used eLabFTW for years and have already established it in practice, others are just beginning their implementation journey or are still considering how and whether to integrate the electronic lab notebook (ELN) into their workflows. Yet other locations have not yet engaged with eLabFTW at all. To address these varying starting points and collaboratively shape the project’s development, a consultative FDM Board has been established.

The FDM Board comprises nine committed representatives from various universities and research institutions across Lower Saxony. Careful consideration was given during selection to include both experienced eLabFTW users and institutions with limited or no prior experience. This ensures that all perspectives are represented in the project’s development.

On April 30, 2026, the FDM Board held its kick-off event—a significant milestone in the project’s timeline. Following brief introductions of the project team and an overview of the goals and activities of eLabFTW@FDM-NDS, board members presented themselves. This was followed by an initial insight into current developments, succeeded by an in-depth discussion.

Four central guiding questions formed the core of the discussion, covering topics such as access via the Academic Cloud, rights and role management, team administration, storage capacity and data management, usage terms, and expectations regarding workshops and training materials. The conversation was marked by constructive ideas, practical insights, and valuable suggestions—clear indicators of the high motivation and expertise among participants.

We sincerely thank the FDM Board for their active involvement, their valuable contributions, and their close collaboration. The discussions have not only opened new perspectives but also provided crucial impulses for the project’s further development.

A follow-up meeting is already scheduled for October 2026—with a special focus on the long-term stability and operational sustainability of eLabFTW within the Academic Cloud.

We look forward to jointly advancing this initiative and successfully establishing a central, user-centered ELN offering for the research community in Lower Saxony.

On behalf of eLabFTW@FDM-NDS

Lea, Benjamin, Jessica, Florian, Jan, Robert, and Ralph

(This article was written and translated with support from Chat AI v0.9.3 (Qwen 3 30B A3B Instruct 2507).)

The Pillar-3 project eLabFTW@FDM-NDS aims to host the electronic lab notebook eLabFTW within the Academic Cloud, making it accessible to all researchers at universities across Lower Saxony.
