What is the Academic Cloud?

The Academic Cloud is a service provided by the GWDG. Depending on the university, various GWDG services for digital teaching, research collaboration, administration, and research (data) management are offered through the Cloud. After your initial registration in the Academic Cloud, services can be accessed via Single Sign-On (SSO) and the Academic ID created in this process. For some services, your account must be activated again through your first login to that service, so that you can be found by other users.

Universities in Lower Saxony can currently still use all services free of charge (with a few exceptions); however, the GWDG is planning to introduce a funding model. Efforts are underway to establish potential state-wide funding for Lower Saxony, but individual contracts per university are also possible. At present, central funding for most services is secured until 2026. For details on funding, see the “Licensing” section under each service. From 2027 onwards, the planned funding model is expected to be implemented.
In addition to general services, there are also services that were financed through a project or a partner university, which means that they are not available to every university or are not financed permanently.

Most of the services run on GWDG servers and therefore comply with German data protection and data security regulations; in most cases, the GWDG privacy policy applies. The status of individual services can be viewed at GWDG Status.
